Reliable Ion-Exchange DM Water Treatment Systems
A Demineralization Plant, commonly called a DM Plant, uses ion-exchange technology to remove dissolved ionic impurities from water.
In a conventional two-bed system, water passes through a cation exchanger followed by an anion exchanger. The cation resin exchanges positively charged ions and the anion resin removes negatively charged ions.
For applications requiring higher purity, a mixed-bed polishing stage can be incorporated after the primary demineralization process.
DM Plant Design Parameters
- ✓ Raw-water analysis

Types of DM Plants We Supply
The DM plant configuration is selected according to feed water quality, required purity, capacity and application.
Two-Bed DM Plant
A conventional cation-anion demineralization system for industrial applications requiring reduced dissolved ions.
Cation Exchanger
Cation exchange resin removes positively charged ions and converts the associated salts into their acid form.
Anion Exchanger
Anion exchange resin removes negatively charged ions after the cation exchange stage.
Mixed-Bed DM Plant
Cation and anion resins are combined in one vessel to provide a high-purity polishing stage.
Automatic DM Plant
Automatic valves and programmed regeneration sequences can be incorporated according to project requirements.
Custom DM Plant
Custom capacity, vessel sizing, resin quantity and regeneration arrangements can be engineered according to water analysis.
How a Two-Bed DM Plant Works
A conventional DM system uses cation and anion ion-exchange stages followed by suitable polishing where required.
Feed Water
Pretreated water enters the DM system.
Cation Exchange
Cations such as calcium, magnesium and sodium are exchanged with hydrogen ions.
Anion Exchange
Anions such as chloride, sulphate and bicarbonate are exchanged with hydroxide ions.
Polishing
A mixed-bed stage can provide additional ion removal where higher purity is required.
DM Water
Treated water is monitored through conductivity or resistivity according to the application.
DM Resin Regeneration Process
Ion-exchange resins require regeneration after their working capacity is exhausted. The exact chemical and regeneration sequence depends on the resin and plant configuration.
Cation Resin Regeneration
The cation exchanger is normally regenerated using a suitable acid such as hydrochloric acid, according to the selected resin and design.
Anion Resin Regeneration
The anion exchanger is normally regenerated using sodium hydroxide/caustic solution according to the resin manufacturer's requirements.
Rinse & Return to Service
After regeneration, the resin beds are rinsed until the required operating condition is achieved.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is a DM Plant?
A Demineralization Plant is a water-treatment system that uses ion-exchange technology to remove dissolved ionic impurities from water and produce demineralized water.
How does a Two-Bed DM Plant work?
Water generally passes first through a cation exchanger and then through an anion exchanger. The cation resin removes positively charged ions and the anion resin removes negatively charged ions.
What is a Mixed-Bed DM Plant?
A mixed-bed demineralizer contains cation and anion exchange resins together in one vessel and is generally used as a polishing stage when higher-purity water is required.
What chemicals are used for DM Plant regeneration?
Depending on the resin and plant design, cation resin is commonly regenerated using an acid such as hydrochloric acid, while anion resin is commonly regenerated using sodium hydroxide. Actual chemical concentration and regeneration procedure must follow the plant and resin manufacturer's design.
What information is required to select a DM Plant?
Important parameters include raw-water analysis, flow rate, operating hours, TDS, conductivity, hardness, alkalinity, silica, chloride, sulphate and the required quality of DM water.
Can a DM Plant be installed after an RO Plant?
Yes. An RO system can be used as pretreatment for a DM plant in suitable applications. This can reduce the ionic loading on the ion-exchange system, but the complete configuration should be selected from actual feed-water and product-water requirements.
Do you provide DM Plant service and resin replacement?
Yes. Existing DM plants can be assessed for resin replacement, valve issues, regeneration performance, conductivity problems and other maintenance requirements.
Do you supply DM Plants in Chennai and Tamil Nadu?
Yes. RRR ENVIRO SYSTEMS supports suitable DM Plant supply, installation, commissioning and service requirements in Chennai and across Tamil Nadu.
